Community members to be honored at Annual Humanitarian Awards

Each year the Club recognizes individuals for their dedication, sacrifice and accomplishments in humanitarian service to the community during our Annual Humanitarian Dinner.

Each year the Club recognizes individuals for their dedication, sacrifice and accomplishments in humanitarian service to the community during our Annual Humanitarian Dinner.

The Boys & Girls Club of Bristol Family Center will present its 32nd Annual Humanitarian Awards Dinner this Thursday, Oct. 6, 5:30 p.m., at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel.

Four community members and one organization will be honored for their many years of community service and volunteerism.

Howard Schmelder and Craig Yarde will receive Humanitarian Awards recognizing their dedication, sacrifice and accomplishments in humanitarian service.

Valerie Furey will receive this year’s PLUS award, which is presented each year to a woman, family, or civic organization who unselfishly gives time, energy and heartfelt devotion to people in the community.

David Kushlan will receive the Oliver Gaudreau award, given to a member of the Club’s Older Members Association (OMs) who embodies the characteristics that the late Ollie Gaudreau. Gaudreau was a 70-year member who spent a significant amount of his adult life working for the benefit of the club.

Waterbury man killed in motorcycle crash

BETHANY — State Police say a Waterbury man was killed after his motorcycle crashed on the Litchfield Turnpike. Police say the crash happened just before 9:30 p.m. in Bethany. They were called to the area of Litchfield Turnpike and Hatfield Road for the accident, police say. The driver, Adam Corcoran, 36, of Waterbury, was seriously injured and rushed to Yale-New Haven hospital. He later died from his injuries.
