Law enforcement officers and school officials in central Connecticut are on high alert after a number of social media posts by “creepy clowns” threatened several schools.
Reports of people in clown costumes scaring others have popped up across the country.
On Tuesday, Burlington Superintendent of Schools Alan Beitman for Region 10 Schools said “Photos showing menacing-looking clowns have been posted on some social networking sites. At this time there is no indication this incident poses any real or substantial threat to students, staff and or visitors to Regional School District #10.”
“We do however take any threats very seriously; In light of the recent news reports from some Connecticut school districts, we will continue to monitor the situation throughout the week and take all necessary precautions to ensure student and staff safety in all our schools.” Beitman.
Also on Tuesday, Naugatuck police said they would have an addition presence at town schools following social media posts involving clowns that mentioned the schools specifically. Police do not believe any threats are credible, but a “thorough” investigation is underway.
Later in the day Naugatuck police said they arrested two girls in regard to the “creepy clown” social media postings that were made Monday.
They said they arrested teen juvenile females under the age of 14. Both were charged with disorderly conduct and conspiracy to commit disorderly conduct.
On Monday night, the New Haven school district said it was working with city police to “investigate the authenticity of a number of clown-related Instagram posts that have been brought to our attention.” The school district security director has asked that clown costumes be banned during the Halloween season.
Newington schools also assured parents these messages about clowns were just a hoax after a middle school student forwarded a post from an Instagram account.
It isn’t the first time that creepy clown reports have become a trend before Halloween. Reports date back to at least 1981, according to Slate. In many instances the clowns aren’t found.
