Webster Bank and The Governor’s Prevention Partnership recently celebrated their 15-year partnership with the announcement of a $25,000 grant by Webster and a shared presentation at the National Mentoring Summit in Washington, D.C.

Webster, who has long been recognized as a corporate leader in the field of youth mentoring through its Mentorship Program, has now invested more than $300,000 in support of the Partnership since it began partnering with the nonprofit in 2002.

Dawn Morris, Webster’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer, who serves as the Partnership’s co-chair, along with Governor Dannel Malloy, co-presented with Partnership president Jill Spineti last week at the National Mentoring Summit on engaging board members to build youth mentoring.

The National Mentoring Summit, hosted annually by MENTOR: National Mentoring Partnership, attracts more than 1,000 mentoring practitioners, board members, executive directors, and staff from across the country, who are interested in working with their boards to create opportunities to expand mentoring whether through the investment of funds or human capital.  The Governor’s Prevention Partnership is one of 22 state and local affiliates that work to promote quality-based mentoring programs and expand mentoring opportunities for youth.

“Webster Bank has previously been recognized nationally through MENTOR for their commitment to mentoring,” said Spineti.  “The Partnership and Webster Bank have worked together for more than a decade to ensure more youth are served by quality mentoring across the state and we appreciate Webster’s commitment to Connecticut’s youth.”

“Webster Bank mentors give more than 5,000 hours annually for mentoring,” said Morris.  “The bank believes in prevention and supports initiatives that help young people to aspire to a positive future,” Morris explained. “We look forward to continuing to support mentoring and other initiatives that support young people and make our communities stronger.”

Workshop attendees were interested in Spineti and Morris’ perspectives as nonprofit and business leaders on how they can engage their own Boards of Directors and corporations in their communities to further mentoring initiatives.  With participants from Portland, Oregon, to rural Vermont and Montana, Spineti noted that “while communities may be drastically different, engagement always comes down to one thing:  Building strong relationships with those in your community,”

Morris inspired workshop participants by providing ideas for using social media to recruit more mentors, engaging vendors and customers in the effort, and supporting employees by giving them one hour during the work day to mentor a young person.  She also provided examples from her board leadership position for engaging board members in “friend raisers” and other strategies for building support.
