I was very impressed recently with former President George W. Bush’s comment that “We need an independent media to hold people like me to account.
Power can be very addictive and it can be corrosive, and it’s important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power,”
He also told Matt Lauer: “I consider the media to be indispensable to democracy.”
I wish that local Republicans felt the same way as their fellow Republican.
Our mayor has very publicly expressed his anger when local reporters or columnists from various publications portray him in an unflattering light. He has even taken to Facebook and Twitter to attack news media. (Who does this remind you of?)
It is an election year for our mayor and city council and I notice that all the Republicans have already announced that they are running again – less than a month after voting for pay increases for whoever gets elected next November in a special meeting which Nutmeg TV did not cover.
I hope the media does their job in helping us to understand the issues and what is going on with all the issues – from the downtown hospital project, Memorial Boulevard, taxes to why we can’t seem to fix potholes.
We need real reporting so we can make decisions, not alternative facts or facts spoon fed to us by the people who want to hold on to their power and glory.
We urgently need the media to hold our local leaders and the President accountable. The media is not the “enemy of the people” as our 45th President has stated, and it appears our Mayor has followed his example by continuing attacks on local news media.
Now, more than ever, we need an independent media that will hold our leaders accountable.
