Friends of the Bristol Animal Shelter Donate Emergency Generator

Stakeholders gather to celebrate the installation of the emergency generator at the City of Bristol Pound. From L-R seated: Friends officers President Trish Ulin, Vice President Lindsey Rivers and Secretary Ellen Zoppo-Sassu. From L-R standing: Animal Control Officer Ray Zagorski, City of Bristol Facilities Director Dave Oakes, Animal Control Officer Brian Skinner, Alec Dill, O.J. Mann Electric Services, Bill Thomas, The Home Depot Store Manager in Bristol, Bryan Austin, City of Bristol custodial staff, and City Councilman David Preleski who serves on the Building Committee, along with Council members Dave Mills and Jodi Zils-Gagne who were unable to attend.

The Friends of the Bristol Animal Shelter recently donated an emergency generator to the City’s Pound. “In the event that there is a loss of power and/or there is a delay in the Animal Control Officers reaching the Pound, we wanted to make sure the animals were able to stay warm and have some emergency lighting in the meantime,” stated Trish Ulin, President of the Friends organization.

The generator was purchased locally at The Home Depot and installed by OJ Mann. “We are very appreciative of the City Council Building Committee’s speed in reviewing and approving this so that the generator was in place for this winter,” stated Lindsey Rivers, Vice President of the Friends.

The Home Depot in Bristol sold the generator at cost, and it was installed by O.J. Mann Electric Services for only cost as well.

Last year, the Friends raised money at community events and also through the generosity of the Bristol Fire Union Local #773 at their annual Tip A Firefighter event at Chili’s. The generator was the result of these fundraising efforts, as were the expenses associated with the new outside mural painted by Rhonda Denoto and the Art Squad and ongoing veterinarian expenses for sick animals.

In the last 4 years, the Friends of the Bristol Animal Shelter have worked with the City’s Animal Control officers to pro-actively adopt out over 75 dogs. In addition, they have raised funds to groom, train, and vaccinate others dogs to improve their chances of finding a forever home.

The group’s current goal is to renovate a large outside area adjacent to the Pound into a recreation area for the dogs to exercise and have some time outside of their cages.

The Friends of the Bristol CT Animal Shelter is an approved 501(c)3 tax exempt non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of animals in need.

Through public donations, it strives to improve living conditions for animals; arrange and help fund both Pound and feral animal neutering/spaying to reduce over-population, and as a result reduce the number of unwanted animals who face euthanasia; provide foster homes for animals waiting to be adopted and work with other rescue groups to get as many homeless animals into loving homes as possible.

If you would like to donate directly to the Friends of the Bristol Animal Shelter, please mail tax-deductible donations to them at P.O. Box 1155 in Bristol, CT 06011-1150.
