To friends, family, and supporters,
Representing Bristol’s First District on the City Council has been a privilege and an honor. In just four years, I’ve met hundreds of Bristol citizens who share my vision of a Bristol that works for all people of all backgrounds, an inclusive city in which adult conversations take place about important issues.
I’m proud to have worked with many of you to support a cultural and community arts center at the former Memorial Boulevard School. I’m honored to have stood shoulder to shoulder with so many of you — my brothers and sisters fighting for the cause of working families — to block an immoral and fiscally reckless effort to outsource the cafeteria workers. Together we’ve advocated for our schools and fought to make sure our children get the resources they need to thrive in their education. In my tenure I’ve led efforts to increase our energy efficiency, hold elected officials accountable for their actions, and make government more transparent.
Though there are still so many things I want to work on and so many things that should be changed about the way Bristol does business, I have decided not to seek election to municipal office this year.
Taking a brief sabbatical from electoral politics will allow me to focus on finishing my Master’s degree at Trinity College and pursue other professional endeavors. Additionally, I am getting married next Fall, and my bride-to-be and I have a lot of planning to do!
To the chagrin of some but hopefully to the delight of many, I can guarantee you that while I may not be seeking office this year, I’m not going anywhere and I will be “back at it” again soon, using my voice to fight for our values and pursue our shared vision of a better Bristol.
Whether or not I stand for election, the fact always remains that I stand with YOU as my friends and neighbors. Together, let’s hold office seekers accountable for the things they say and do, and let’s demand from them what Bristol needs most — a plan!
Thank you all for your support over the years. Working for you and serving my hometown has been a dream come true. To all the candidates in this year’s election, I wish you the best of luck. I’ll be watching.
With so much love, gratitude, and respect in my heart…Sincerely yours,
Councilor Calvin Brown
