Ellen Zoppo-Sassu has officially announced that she’s running for mayor again this year.
Current Mayor Ken Cockayne made his announcement for a third term bid back in January.
In the 2015 election, Cockayne narrowly won by over 100 votes.
In a prepared statement back in January, Cockayne wrote “Working together, we expanded our tax base by selling Bingham and O’Connell schools and several lots in the Southeast Industrial Park, implemented a senior volunteer tax credit, welcomed the Bristol Blues baseball team, renovated Fire Engine Companies #4 on Vincent P Kelly Road and #5 on Mix Street, completed renovations to Muzzy Field with expanded event parking, built two synthetic fields at the highs schools and improved our quality of life through aggressive anti-blight and anti- crime initiatives that have resulted in the demolishing of over unsafe 50 structures and a crime rate at its lowest level in fifteen years.”
Zoopo-Sassu took multiple jabs at Cockayne regarding many of his self-proclaimed achievements and his vision for Bristol during her announcement at the Bristol Historical Society.
The Bristol Press reported “Zoppo criticized Cockayne for calling Centre Square “an entertainment destination called The Patch instead of a vacant lot” and Memorial Boulevard School an “ongoing project” instead of “sitting empty for five years.” She also criticized him for “promising zero tax increase when zero is anything from one to five percent.”
Zoppo-Sassu’s full announcement was also posted on social media.
The Bristol Republican Town Committee also has its own Facebook Page but Cockayne has yet to start one.
