Bristol Special Olympics Brings Home The Gold

Special Olympics Connecticut 2017

Special Olympics Connecticut held its annual Summer Games on Friday, June 9th through Sunday, June 11th. The event took place at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.

Athletes from Bristol and over 2,400 other athletes from across the State competed in cycling, soccer, swimming, tennis and track & field events.

The Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Connecticut took place on June 7th, 8th and 9th. Officers volunteered their time to serve as torchbearers and carry the Special Olympics “Flame of Hope” through Bristol and other towns and cities to raise awareness and funds to benefit Special Olympics athletes and inspire communities to respect and include people of all abilities.

Former City Council member and current Mayoral candidate Ellen Zoppo-Sassu said “Congratulations to Bristol Special Olympic athletes – It’s a great reflection on the team’s commitment & skills as well as exciting for everyone who trained with them, cheered for them, and participated in the Torch Run through Bristol.”

Summer Games athletes from Bristol and around the state trained for a minimum of eight weeks in their sport.

Bristol athletes trained at Bristol Eastern High School.

Along with the athletes competing, over 500 coaches and 2,000 volunteers participates and supported the event.

Individuals from Bristol Special Olympics brought home multiple gold, silver and bronze metals.

Special Olympics Connecticut provides year-round sports training and competitions for over 13,000 athletes of all ages with intellectual disabilities.

Through the joy of sport, the Special Olympics movement transforms lives and communities throughout the state and in 170 countries around the world by promoting good health and fitness and inspiring inclusion and respect for all people, on and off the playing field.
