Candidate Q&A: Eric Carlson

Eric Carlson candidate for City Council in the First District (R)

The Roundup sent questionnaires to every candidate for this year’s municipal election. In an effort to properly inform voters, their answers are unedited. The goal is to give the candidates the opportunity to offer their thoughts on issues directly to their constitutes. In return, it gives voters the opportunity to formulate their own decisions on what they have to say.

Next up is Eric Carlson candidate for City Council in the First District (R)

What are your most pressing issues?

Development of the downtown and the completion of the route six widening.  The hospital plan is a good start to get additional development underway.

How do you feel about Bristol’s marketing efforts, what would you suggest?

Bristol has the highest economic increase in the state, at a time when much of the rest of the state is floundering.  Justin Malley has done a phenomenal job and I would help provide for him what he asks. Our entrepreneur contest that provides grants to new ventures was a great idea.

How do your thoughts and ideas differ from your opponent(s)?

I don’t know my opponents well enough to criticise them.  What I do understand is that they will work directly under Ellen to follow through with what she wants,  it is unlikely they will change course to do what citizens want as situations change.

What are your thoughts on Bristol Hospital purchasing a portion of the former mall site? Will it help revitalize downtown?

The hospital site will be an active business that can only help bring people downtown.  Knowing how doctors schedule patients it would be nice to use a pager system like restaurants use so people can wait in the new restaurants or coffee shops that open up on Main St.

What is your position on moving City Hall?

If it will save money over a costly remodel for the courant building I would be in favor.

What is your stance on crime in Bristol?

We have problems with crime caused by a drug epidemic that is a nationwide problem.  We need to get more addicts into treatment and I am working personally on some help in that area.  We need an increased effort when dealing with people that overdose on drugs, but just go back out and use again. I will be working with my son Mike Carlson who is directly involved in drug treatment to come up with some more useful solutions to dealing with addicts.

Is social media helping or hurting Bristol at the moment?

In social media people seem to take the easy road and complain.  It is human nature to be worried or pessimistic. We need to encourage the ones who are optimistic and come up with helpful ideas.
