D’Amato calls first District a “formality”

Anthony D’Amato

During last weeks State of the City on the Bristol Beat with Host Mike Anthony, Mike’s guests were Candidate for City Council in the First District, Democrat, Greg Hahn and City Councilor for the First District, Republican, Tony D’Amato.

The First District is one of three in Bristol. The first mostly covers the Northeast and Forestville sections of Town

Host Mike Anthony asked both candidates what were their most pressing issues in District 1.

Both candidates offered similar comments and complaints from constituents about District 1 — traffic.

However, during D’Amato’s response, he said District 1 was a “formality”.

I asked D’Amato about that comment and here’s what he had to say.

I see the district map in this city as a “formality” – rather a way to elect people for office.  To think that for example myself in District 1, only represents that area is a falsehood.  I have jurisdiction, oversight and influence city-wide, beyond my district,” said D’Amato.

“Each member of the council regardless of the their district is committed to Bristol and not just for example, District 1. That is why I mentioned and I recommended that a future Charter Revision Commission take up city council members “at large” and why I classify districts in my opinion as a “formality” for voting rather than anything else regarding municipal government.”

D’Amato concluded with “No sane individual would focus their attention on just their district as it go against their duty as an elected official in Bristol.”

This Year’s Municipal election is on Tuesday, November 7.
