The Road to Somewhere: Temporarily Closed, Under New Management

Riverside Ave. entrance

The Road to Somewhere is a series of articles that chronicle the redevelopment of the former mall site with the simple start of a road.

A long, long, long time ago, there was a magical awe inspiring company that wanted to transform downtown Bristol.

They said: We use integrative solutions, groundbreaking ideas and community engagement to create thriving & successful communities.

Blah, blah, blah…

Of course I’m talking about Renaissance Downtowns.

That magical awe inspiring  real estate company focused on addressing the unmet demand for mixed-use walkable development with a commitment to social, economic, and environmental sustainability.

Ok, enough with Renaissance. Their unmet demand hit the stop button.

Under New Management: The City of Bristol.

This week it was announced the Centre Square Master Plan and Redevelopment Project is one of 21 economic development projects and programs from across the state to be honored by the Connecticut Economic Resource Center at its annual celebration event in November at The Bushnell in Hartford.

“Our goals when working on economic development projects – including the planning and development of Centre Square – are to encourage business growth, provide new employment opportunities, and more,” said Mayor Ken Cockayne.

“I want to thank our partners on the Centre Square Master Plan and Redevelopment Project, including Centre Square’s first developer Bristol Hospital and Rendina Healthcare Real Estate; planning consultant Milone & MacBroom; City staff; the Bristol Development Authority, City Council, and Board of Finance; and most importantly the residents and property owners in Bristol that have supported and provided input into the Centre Square Master Plan.”

That is great for the City.

The New Road:

It’s actually really cool — yes I said cool — to see a road closed sign up. It’s a road already without a name yet. Hint hint…

The new road will be about 1,000 feet long and contain many streetscape components including trees, brick pavers, a center median made of “stamped asphalt,” decorative lights, landscaping, granite curbing, and a bus stop location.

The road will match the current look of North Main and Main Streets. The City will also update the traffic signal at North Main Street and Laurel streets.

I’ll end this edition of The Road to Somewhere with this:

Whomever wins this year’s municipal election will have an awesome — yes I said awesome —  task at hand.

However, they will also have immense pressure from the public to develop around this new road and deliver the goods.

While this new road is a great starting point, it’s only the beginning.

Stay tuned for the next edition of The Road to Somewhere.

Oh, the things you can do in Sin City. You can gamble, hit up an all-you-can eat buffet or catch a show. But, this month at least, the best show just might be outside. A winter storm working its way through the Southwest dusted Las Vegas with half an inch of snow Wednesday, a record for this date, according to the National Weather Service.
