The Whigville Preservation Group and its parent organization the Burlington Land Trust are proud to announce they have taken ownership of 15.17 acres from the developer of the future Stone Ridge Crossing off Jerome Avenue in Burlington.
The open space set-aside gifted from Robert D. King, Inc. represents approximately 30-percent of the planned 23-unit housing development’s nearly 52-acres.
“This is the first significant private parcel of land to be preserved in Whigville in perpetuity,” said Patti Smaldone, leader of the Whigville Preservation Group. “We are grateful to the developer and town leaders for making this possible.”
The open space has been conserved as a single parcel that will eventually be accessible to the public. The land is flanked both south and north by equally large undeveloped parcels.
“It is hoped this will be the founding parcel of an eventual greenway connecting the entire eastern border of Whigville from the Bristol city line, north to George Washington Turnpike, and east to Monce Road,” said Paul Rochford, Chair of the Burlington Land Trust.
“This represents a significant opportunity to help shape the future of eastern Whigville, which is mostly undeveloped today,” said Ted Shafer, Burlington First Selectman. “We are committed to doing it in a way in which all stakeholders are winners – land owners, developers, and the residents of Burlington, today and tomorrow.”
