Tunxis offers free lectures — Zoppo-Sassu to speak

Tunxis Community College’s Civic Engagement Institute invites the community to the following free lectures and discussions during the semester.

Feb. 14, 10 a.m.
West Hartford Police Lt. Michael Perruccio will discuss Community Engagement in 600 Building Room 6-127.

Feb. 21, 1:15 p.m.
Two speakers from Hands on Hartford who have faced homelessness will share their personal stories during “Faces of Homelessness,” in 600 Building, Room 6-127. The talks include a short presentation on homelessness and a Q&A session. Co-sponsored with the Tunxis Service Learning Club. Refreshments will be provided. Feb. 28, 1:15 p.m.
“Opioid Crisis,” a discussion with professors Rafaele Fierro, Ph.D., and James Schlatter, in 200 Building, Room 201.

March 5, 9 a.m.
Bristol Mayor Ellen Zoppo-Sassu will give a talk on “Getting Young People Involved,” in 200 Building, Room 201.

April 4, 1:15 p.m.
“Bridging the Gap: Religious Discourse at Tunxis” with Mohamed Mountassir, Colleen Keyes, Ph.D., and Rafaele Fierro, Ph.D., in 200 Building, Room 201. On the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., and at a time when religious differences can divide and polarize, Tunxis Civic Engagement Institute aims to foster peaceful and productive relations in a discussion that spans religion and politics.

April 26, 1 p.m.
New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart is the guest speaker for “Political Challenges and Young People,” in 200 Building, Room 201.

The Tunxis Civic Engagement Institute is a campus organization committed to sharing knowledge and information for Tunxis students to become good citizens and neighbors.

Besides civic engagement activities that occur in the classroom, the Civic Engagement Institute provides forums, guest speakers and other intellectual exchanges designed to generate ideas and help improve the lives of others.

A well-known surgeon from Newport Beach and his girlfriend are accused of drugging and sexually assaulting two women, and Southern California authorities said they believe there could be many more victims.
