Wheeler to Offer Opioid and Mental Health First Aid Help

Wheeler Clinic Bristol

“Opioids: What Older Adults Need to Know,” happens on Tuesday, June 12 at 11 a.m. at Southington Public Library, 255 Main St, Southington.

Heather Clinger, MPH, CPS, Wheeler program manager, will help participants learn what they to need know and ask when being prescribed opioid medications, as well as strategies for proper medication disposal. National and local data will be shared as well. Registration is required through the Southington Public Library website atwww.southingtonlibrary.org.

Mental Health First Aid will be offered on June 21 and 22 from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. at the Southington Community YMCA, 130 North Main Street, Southington. Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour training course designed to give members of the public key skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

Included on SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices, studies show that training in Mental Health First Aid builds confidence in helping an individual experiencing a mental health challenge, reduces negative or distancing attitudes towards individuals with mental illnesses, and increases mental health literacy – being able to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.

Registration and attendance on both days are required. To register, visit www.ctclearinghouse.org/registration. Please call Justine Micalizzi at 860.414.1235 for questions.

Wheeler’s Southington Health Outreach facilitates access to behavioral and mental health care for Southington residents. The project employs a three-tiered approach to serving individuals and families in this community, including outreach and health education; system navigation assistance; and efforts to reduce barriers to care such as transportation, child care concerns and others.

The Southington Health Outreach Project is coordinated by Wheeler Clinic and funded by the Bradley H. Barnes & Leila U. Barnes Memorial Trust at Main Street Community Foundation.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018, Wheeler provides comprehensive solutions that address complex health issues, providing individuals, families and communities with accessible, innovative care that encourages health, recovery, and growth at all stages of life.
