Buy Nothing Movement Hits Bristol

Rockwell Park Bristol, CT.

The sweeping social media Buy Nothing Project is a hyper-local focused gift giving project based on the simple acts of giving and receiving, no cash involved.

Started in the Pacific Northwest, the project expanded to more than 280,000 members in 18 nations in less than three years.

Members give and receive items, time, and services from their neighbors.

Group members can post an “ask” for something they would like or a “gift” they want to pass along to new neighbors or someone in need of help locally on the “Buy Nothing” Facebook group.

The project was founded by Liesl Clark and Rebecca Rockefeller in Washington several years ago.

Its goal is to strengthen neighborhood communities, using a positive helpful Facebook group to connect with others.

While Facebook makes money by selling stuff through advertising, it’s also spawned thousands of people where the goal is to give things away.

The ‘Buy Nothing’ project has hit Connecticut locally in Burlington and Harwinton, offering neighbors a chance to help each other, avoid waste and fill needs they might have- like Craigslist, but without any cost.

Post anything you’d like to give away, lend, or share amongst neighbors. Ask for anything you’d like to receive for free or borrow.

The groups keep it legal, civil, with no buying or selling, no trades or bartering, it is strictly a gift concept.

A new Bristol-based Buy Nothing Project has been formed and is looking for members to spread the mission of offering people a way to give, receive, share, lend, and express gratitude through a  worldwide network of local gift communities in which the true wealth is the web of connections formed between people who are real-life neighbors.

Here are the steps for getting involved in Buy Nothing Bristol and how it works once you join:

Step 1: Request permission to join a Buy Nothing Facebook group. If you are within the geographic boundaries set by the group, you’ll be admitted.

Step 2: Watch the group’s Facebook page for postings of items being offered by other members. If you are interested in receiving those items for free, reply to the post. It’s up to the person offering the items to decide who gets them so it’s sometimes a good idea to note why you want the items and how you’d use them.

Step 3: If you’re chosen, the giver and receiver agree when to meet and exchange the items. The idea is to give without asking for anything in return and to build neighborhood connections.

If you choose, you can help the community online in a positive way by joining the new Buy Nothing Project Bristol.
