Mayor Ellen Zoppo-Sassu recently welcomed her first group of summer interns to work on a variety of tasks over the next 6 weeks. This is an outgrowth of the Youth Cabinet initiative that ran during the school year that focused on younger students ages 10-18. The summer interns are high school and college age students who have specific areas of interest that they will be focusing on, spending 1 or 2 days in the office each week.

Jonathan Donovan, 27, a second year law student at the University Of Connecticut School Of Law will be working between the Mayor’s Office and the Corporation Counsel’s office for research and ordinance work.

Jen Harlow, 20, is a graduate of Bristol Central and a rising junior at Queens University of Charlotte, currently studying Political Science. During her internship this summer, Jen hopes to focus on helping to develop policy and look at socioeconomic disparities among children in the school system.

Alex Hugh, 20, is also a graduate of Bristol Central and a rising junior at Bryant University, double majoring in Marketing and Political Science. Alex worked in the Mayor’s Office over winter break and returns as an intern this summer and continues to help with administrative work.

Sofia Patria, 19, is a graduate of Bristol Central and is a rising sophomore at Penn State in the Pre-Med program. This summer, Sofia is helping to develop and organize the new Opioid Task Force.

Teran Chapis, 17, is a Bristol resident who graduated last month from the Academy of Science & Innovation magnet school in New Britain. She will be attending Wellesley College in the fall. This summer Teran will be working in conjunction with Jen on local education policy, with an emphasis on the impact of Bristol students attending magnet schools.

Katie Bardeck, 15, is looking forward to being a sophomore at Bristol Eastern High School. Katie has expressed her interest in politics, law and criminal justice. Katie will also be helping with administrative work.

Emily Passamano, 15, will be a sophomore at Bristol Central in the fall. She will be working over the summer to organize the monthly activities of next year’s Youth Cabinet, which will have monthly sessions from October through May.

“With Cathy Savino as the only full-time staff person in the Mayor’s Office, we are excited to have this group of interns coming in and delving into some policy and special project work that we just don’t have time to get to,” stated Mayor Ellen Zoppo-Sassu. “It’s also a great hands-on opportunity for young people who are interested in government to get a front row seat to see what happens every day.”

The intern program is an unpaid, flexible schedule format which allows the students to also have part-time summer jobs and/or play on summer teams. This is the first time a summer intern program has been offered. The office will accept resumes of interested individuals for winter break beginning August 15.
