The Peter P. Monaco, Jr. Detachment 40 Marine Corps. League hosted their Hike To Remember event on May 12th at the Glastonbury Elks Club. The annual event supports their philanthropic and advocacy efforts to support the needs of Veterans and their families.

They provide support to Veterans and military families in the state of Connecticut by creating this large community of support and brotherhood for those in need, as well as the prevention of suicide among Veterans. The detachment is named after Mike Monaco’s Great uncle, who was a Marine killed in Korea.

Each day there are around 20 veterans who commit suicide. What’s more, they report that veterans’ suicides account for 18% of the suicide deaths in the country, while they only make up 8.5% of the adult population.” Hiking is one way this local non-profit tries to combat the statistic.

They conduct a variety of different events throughout the year, but their 22K Hike is one of their biggest fundraisers.

The “hike” portion of this year’s event was open to Veterans and service members from all branches, with over 210 participants which doubled in size from the previous year. This year $50,000 was raised in donations that were directly given to support several different programs such as the Semper Fi Fund, K-9 Jake the Dog Fund (Fairfield Police) and the Young Marines Program.

The funds will also support veterans and their families that have a financial need.

The mission of the Peter P. Monaco Jr. Detachment 40 of the Marine Corps League is to unite all Marines and service members of the armed forces through community service.

They are an organization comprised of civic-minded Veterans who shared a duty to our country then and a duty to our community now.

They are a non-profit organization seeking a few good men and women to help fulfill our obligation of preserving and honoring the traditions, values and history of those who selflessly served before us.

The Detachment takes great pride in serving the community by providing aid and support to Veterans and their families during difficult times by building strong relationships within the local community. Semper Fidelis.
