VIDEO: Remembering the Plainville Drive-In

The Plainville Drive-In was a classic 1950s-style drive-in theater that was operating into the 1980’s.

The very popular central Connecticut drive-in closed after the 1987 season for an indoor mall project that eventually never happened.

It was finally torn down around 1997 for an outdoor shopping center.

The drive-in held 1100 cars and offered a playground.

Do you remember? What movies did you see?

Check out this video recorded after the Drive-in was abandoned.

While the Plainville Drive-in is gone, The Pleasant Valley Drive-in Movie Theater is in operation.

It is located in the outskirts of Litchfield County in Barkhamsted, CT.

Operating since 1947, under the same ownership for the past 19 years, it continues to offer a great outdoor family fun venue catering to all ages.

The theater sits on a 3 acre lot near the west branch of the Farmington River.

Another Drive in option is the Southington Drive-In, the only community-owned and volunteer operated facility in the state.

The Southington Drive-In is not a for-profit business. Instead, all proceeds are distributed to our host civic and non-profit organizations.

Originally, the facility opened in 1955 as a for-profit business and featured movies for nearly half a century before closing in 2002.

In 2004, Southington residents voted to purchase the property to expand nearby Recreation Park and enjoy continued outdoor activities at the nostalgic site.

In Laos, spend the night in the world’s tallest treehouses

It’s the stuff of childhood dreams. As the sun begins to break through the darkness in Laos’ Nam Kan National Park, the cries of wild, black-crested gibbons echo through the jungle air. Crawling out of our mosquito-net covered beds, perched high in wooden treehouses that tower over the jungle floor, we grab our binoculars for a closer look as these lively animals leap through the trees in the distance, the leaves around them shaking wildly as the branches bounce up […]

Asian tick that clones itself could spread fast and far in the US, study says

The Asian longhorned tick most likely began invading the United States years ago. Now found in nine states, the tick may soon occupy a large swath of eastern North America as well as coastal regions of the Pacific Northwest, according to research published Thursday in the Journal of Medical Entomology. “This tick can bite humans, pets, farm animals and wildlife,” said Ilia Rochlin, author of the study and an entomologist and researcher associated with the Rutgers University Center for Vector Biology. Until recently, this […]
