Discover Burlington: Lamothe’s Sugar House

The Roundup has put together a special section called ‘Discover Burlington!’, just in time for the holidays. It highlights the history of Burlington and what it has to offer now.

Burlington is situated at the foot of the Berkshires and bordering the Farmington River, Burlington is a scenic hill town, rural in nature, located 20 miles west of Hartford. Incorporated in 1806, Burlington is home to the State of Connecticut Fish Hatchery, the Nepaug Reservoir and Sessions Woods Wildlife Management Area.

Almost half of the land in the town is owned by three public water supply companies and the State of Connecticut.

Lamothe’s Sugar House

First up on Discover Burlington is Lamothe’s Sugar House.

Watch how maple syrup is made at this family-owned, maple sugar house. Sample maple syrup and then pick up some to take with you from the country store that also sells jams, honey and more.

And don’t forget to visit with the rabbits.

The Lamothes started farming in 1971 with a few pigs and a vegatable garden. they began making maple syrup for our own use with a modest 7 taps, but soon had requests for purchases of our syrup. As demand became greater than their supply, they have, a number of times, expanded thier number of taps and size of operation.

“We have come a long way since the first 7 taps, with the help of family and close friends, expanding to more than 4000 taps in our present state-of-the-art sugar house — with a much larger evaporator. Over the years we have added rabbits, golden retrievers.”

The Sugar House

“We gather sap in the spring from a modest pipe-line system which encompasses about 15 miles of plastic tubing. From there it is pumped into a tank onto our truck and is brought back to the sugar house to be boiled and processed into maple syrup.

In 2003 we converted what used to be the woodshed into a state-of-the-art packing room for bottling our maple syrup and products. In 2008 we completely renovated our country gift store adding new siding and a new roof.

“Come out for some free hot maple coffee or hot mulled cider. We have lots of new Christmas decorations. As well as lots of maple syrup, pancake mix and honey.
Stock up on your spices for your holiday baking while you are here! Nice and fresh! We also have a nice selection of cookbooks.”
